I object to the new proposed link road that is planned from Dodworth to Huddersfield Road. As I understand the road is to follow the railway line and as such will require the demolition of Station road. Although I live in Huddersfield I believe I have enough interest in the town to enable my objections to be heard.
- My mother in law lives in Station Road and will lose her home if this goes ahead.
- My own mother lives in Darfield part of Barnsley MBC.
- I was brought up in Darfield and lived and worked in the area for many years
My objections are base on the following :-
- I am lead to believe that the sole reason for this new link road is to make part of Will Alsops plan for a tree lined boulevard on Dodworth road come true. I have always been lead to believe that new plans were supposed to be passed only if the majority of the population benefits from the outcome not just a few. I think in this instance this is very much so not the case.
- The road in my belief will only move congestion from one part of town to another i.e. to Summer Lane and then back into Town End again.
- It is my belief that most of the traffic on Dodworth road is heading for town any way so redirecting it is only delaying the inevitable.
- I also believe that because the new road is only single carriageway it will very quickly become out dated and over capacity.
- I am a big believer that bypasses rather than relieve congestion actually create it. Take the M1 for example it has been the cause of a very large increase in congestion in west and south Yorkshire. People expand their horizons when looking for jobs, recreation, housing, shopping this all leads to increased traffic and in my opinion will eventually lead to grid lock.
- I believe that a successful park and ride scheme is what is needed. I regularly go shopping in York and do this because of the convenience and success of the park and ride scheme there.
- If it is heavy (large) vehicles that are causing the problem why not exclude (ban) them from the area. Signs and detours from the M1 would be a cheaper alternative than a new road. These signs could direct traffic by the best route to the various industrial areas around Barnsley. I used to work on the road as a service engineer and always quote Washington Tyne and Wear as a good example of traffic management. The signposting around there is excellent and I never had any trouble at all finding places.
- Is it not a fact that when someone is heading for a Barnsley address junction 37 is the one that they currently leave the M1 at, even though this may not be the best place? Good signposting would in my humble opinion help to alleviate the problem of congestion immensely.
- There is a perfectly good relief road to the south of Barnsley that links up eventually with the east of Barnsley at Shafton. This in my humble opinion is not used as much as it should. ( it is always quiet when I use it to get to Darfield)
- I believe a similar relief road to the north of Barnsley is the real answer to the problem. This could eventually complete the link up with the Shafton bypass and the Coalfields Link Road.
Andy Chymera (The Strategic policy manager)is playing down the bad impact that the proposal is going to have on the area.
- New housing development has been cancelled because of the plans
- Homes and businesses will be effected by the plans.
- Homes are to be demolished to make way for the new plan.
- Many homes will have a new road only yards from their bedroom window.
- Traffic will be increased in Summer Lane and Huddersfield Road.
- Pollution levels will be increased along the corridor.
To conclude I believe that this new road is NOT in the interest of the majority of Barnsley residence and will NOT give the required reduction in traffic congestion to the area. A different solution should be sought and considered.
